Discussion:
mathpazo package options

Hello again :)

I hope you don't mind me posting things every now and then. Let me
know if this isn't the best forum for it.

When using mathpazo to select the Palatino font (which I was very
happy to see you support), it should almost certainly use the [sc]
option to use better small caps and better kerning. No-one's using a
new version of LyX with an old version of LaTeX, right? In any case,
the [sc] option has been around for a long time now.

This is the best one, you are welcome. But please create also bugzilla
entries for those bugs as many developers are on holidays.

You can add this by adding the option "sc" to the document class options in the document settings
dialog.

That's not true. There are still people using teTeX (even teTeX 2) and latest LyX.

Please add an enhancement request at bugzilla.lyx.org.

That's unreliable, in case another package has an option of the same
name. Not very likely, of course :)

Bah. Tell 'em to upgrade! :)
I jest.
Did memoir even exist in teTeX 2?

We have a GUI for this. Just click "use true small cpas" in the document
settings (fonts) dialog.

I disagree on making this the default.

Somehow I completely missed the GUI when I brought this up originally.
Sorry about that.

I respect the decision, but why? Small caps are faked by default and,
as I mentioned, the [sc] option improves kerning in the rest of the
font (er, AFAIK). So you're only improving things; when is that bad
thing?

LyX is not the correct place to make this default. If it should be default, it
should be default in the style file (i.e. mathpazo.sty, which should then
provide a [fakesc] option).

LyX should always stick with the style file's default, by default.

(Also, it will break with older LaTeX distributions, which do not come with
real small caps [unless you have commercial fonts]).

Hi Will,

it's great with feedback and this is indeed the corret forum, but don't be
discouraged when we ask you to file bug issues in bugzilla or enhancement
requests. That really does help! Oh, I should also say that it's good the
way you do it, i.e. first discussing it on the list. Sometimes it's not a
bug but a feature :-)

This sounds like you should add an enhanement request for the [sc] option.

best regards,
Christian
